Bangladesh (Beng. বাংলাংলাদেশ), the official name is the People's Republic of Bangladesh (Beng. গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদে) is a state in South Asia. Population - 171.7 million people (2021), territory - 148,460 km². The most densely populated country in the world (excluding dwarf countries) - 1120 people per 1 km². It ranks eighth in the world in terms of population and ninety-second in terms of territory. The capital is Dhaka. The official language is Bengali. Unitary state, parliamentary republic. According to the Economist Intelligence Unit, the country is classified on the Democracy Index as a hybrid regime. It is surrounded by India along the entire perimeter (with the exception of small sections of the border with Myanmar in the southeast) and the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh is a mono-ethnic state, 98% of the population are Bengalis. About 89% of the population is Muslim, 10% is Hindu. Agro-industrial country with a developing economy. The volume of gross domestic product at purchasing power parity for 2020 amounted to 917.8 billion US dollars (about 5400 US dollars per capita). The monetary unit is the Bangladeshi taka. The country was a colonial possession of Great Britain, which began its development in the first half of the 17th century and united most of the territory of modern Bangladesh under its rule by the beginning of the 20th century. The independence of the country was proclaimed on March 26, 1971.
