University of London
The University of London (English University of London; informal London University, abbr. Lond. or, less commonly, Londin) is the second largest university in the UK by the number of students.
History and activities
Established in 1836 and has a complex structure, including 18 colleges and 11 institutes: the London School of Business, the London School of Economics and Political Science, University College London, King's College London and a number of central bodies. The Academic University is the second largest medical school in London. Contests the title of the third (by seniority) university in England from the University of Durham. In 1900, the University of London became a federal structure. University College London was founded under the name "University of London" in 1826, as a secular alternative to the religious universities of Oxford and Cambridge.
The most prestigious college of technology, Imperial College London, became a separate university in 2007.
