Naberezhnye Chelny (Tat. Yar Chaly, from November 19, 1982 to January 6, 1988 - Brezhnev) is a city in the Republic of Tatarstan of Russia. Located in the north-east of the republic on the left bank of the Kama River, the Chelna River and the Nizhnekamsk Reservoir. The city of republican significance, forms the municipality of the city of Naberezhnye Chelny with the status of an urban district as the only settlement in its composition, the administrative center of the Tukayevsky district (the city itself is not included in the district). A large industrial center, the main city of the Nizhnekamsk territorial-production complex and the Naberezhnye Chelninskaya agglomeration. The second most populous city of the republic, 34th in Russia and the third among cities that are not centers of the subjects of the federation. The auto giant KamAZ is located in the city.

Etymology

The first settlement on the site of the city was called Chalninsky Pochinok, from the Chalna River. With further changes in the names, "Chalny" was transformed into "Chelny", perhaps because the main part of the settlement (now the so-called Krasnye Chelny) was then really located on a reddish clay promontory that protruded into the Kama River, resembling the bow of a boat. However, researchers still disagree on this issue. The city was formed from two villages, standing side by side, but separated by the Melekeska River: Mysye Chelny and Berezhnye Chelny. In 1982, the city was renamed Brezhnev in memory of the Soviet party and statesman Leonid I. Brezhnev, but already in 1988 the original name of Naberezhnye Chelny was returned to it.

Geography

The city district borders on Tukayevsky and Yelabugsky districts. The main rivers in the city are: Kama, Chelna, Shilna and their tributaries - Melekeska, Yalhov, Rzhavets, Gardalinka. The distance to Nizhnekamsk is 35 km, to Kazan - 237 km.
