Navalny is a biographical documentary with thriller elements about Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, and the events surrounding his poisoning in August 2020. Director - Canadian Daniel Roer - described the picture as "the story of one man and his struggle with an authoritarian regime." The film premiered on January 25, 2022 at the Sundance Independent Film Festival, where it became a favorite and won the Audience Award. The film covers events between summer 2020 and January 2021. The narrative includes fragments of an interview with Alexei himself, his wife Yulia, daughter Daria, Bulgarian investigative journalist Hristo Grozev. The film begins with Alexei's memories of Tomsk, where there were no provocateurs and policemen familiar to him. The politician became ill on August 20, when he was on board a plane flying to Moscow. Alexei was taken in a serious condition to the Omsk hospital, where Yulia Navalnaya tried to get in, fearing for her husband's safety. Then he was transported to the German clinic Charité. Julia admitted that she forbade filming Alexei on camera, so that in case of death he would not be remembered by people lying in bed. The feed shows the comments of doctors who deny the presence of toxic substances in the patient's body, various clippings with propagandists talking about alcohol or food poisoning. After waking up, Navalny was told that he had been poisoned with a Novichok-class substance, to which he replied: “It’s so stupid!” And recalling the poisoning of the Skripals in 2018, he added that "it's like leaving a signature." Then Navalny's team's acquaintance with Khristo Grozev is shown, who at first arouses their distrust until he shares the results of his investigation.
