The Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., pronunciation [wikimədia faundəiʃon], abbreviated as WMF) is a non-profit charitable organization that maintains the infrastructure for a number of multilingual crowdsourced wiki projects, including Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikibooks, Wikis Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wikiversity, Wikimedia Incubator and Meta-wiki, and was also the owner of the now defunct encyclopedia project Nupedia. The Foundation is the founder of the competition “Vicky Loves Monuments”. The word "Wikipedia" is a trademark and may not be used without permission from the Wikimedia Foundation, like the names and logos of other Wikimedia projects. Web sites on the Internet may use the words wiki and (encyclo) pedia or “wiki” and “- (encyclo) pedia” in their names, but they are not affiliated with Wikimedia Foundation projects. The organization's flagship project, the free encyclopedia Wikipedia, ranks among the ten most visited websites in the world. The projects involve volunteers from different countries, creating "free content" and software available under free licenses. As with other User-generated content projects like YouTube, the Wikimedia Foundation is not the copyright holder of the content hosted on its servers. The Foundation notes that it does not own the copyright for most of the materials posted on Wikipedia, since they are owned by the volunteers who contributed to the project. Like other websites, the Foundation's projects are subject to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and other laws, but the volunteer community monitors compliance with copyright, other standards and internal rules whenever possible. Official complaints about the removal of content are responded to by employees of the Foundation's office within the framework of the appropriate procedure. The people, activities and values associated with the Foundation's projects form the Wikimedia movement, in varying degrees associated with the movements of free software, free culture, anti-copyright, open data and others.
