Mic Drop

"Mic Drop" (stylized as MIC Drop) is a song by South Korean boy band BTS, released on November 24, 2017 by Big Hit Entertainment as one of the tracks on the B-side of the group's fifth mini album Love Yourself: Her. A remixed version with Steve Aoki and a Japanese version of the song were later released. The song is inspired by the incident when US President Barack Obama, after a conference with White House journalists, defiantly threw down the microphone, indicating that he was leaving. In the text of the composition, the band members talk about the success they have achieved so far - high places in the charts, a lot of fans and more. The video clip tells the story of the participants escaping from the interrogation room. "Mic Drop" has become one of the boy band's most popular songs. It received positive reviews from critics, sold in high numbers and was certified gold and silver in a number of countries. The video for it became the 4th work of the group, which reached 1 billion views on YouTube video hosting.

Background and release

South Korean boy band BTS consistently topped the Billboard charts with The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 (2015), The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever and Wings: You Never Walk Alone (2016). In 2017, the group garnered significant attention from American audiences when they won the Top Social Artist award at the Billboard Music Awards, becoming the first K-pop act to both be nominated and win the award. On September 18, BTS released their fifth mini album, Love Yourself: Her, which became even more commercially successful than previous albums, peaking at number 7 on the Billboard 200 main album chart, thus becoming the first Korean album to top 10. Initially, "Mic Drop" was released as a B-side track, but it was later announced that a remix by American DJ Steve Aoki featuring rapper Desiigner would be released on November 7, which would become a full-fledged single. In an interview with Billboard magazine, the latter stated that he met the group during the Billboard Music Awards earlier that year and agreed to collaborate there. As a separate, second single from Love Yourself: Her, "Mic Drop" was released by Big Hit Entertainment on November 24, 2017. On December 5, the song was featured on Contemporary hit radio, a special format featuring the top hits of the moment.
