Athletics is one of the fundamental and most widespread sports branches, which is characterized by basic human movement and behavior, and which includes: running, throwing and jumping disciplines. Because of its comprehensiveness, it is called, and it truly is, the queen of sports. Physical strength, endurance, speed and agility are acquired through athletic exercises, and qualities of the will such as courage, determination and perseverance are strengthened. The disciplines of athletics are characterized by motor movements that can be successfully applied during the educational process or through other forms of exercise, which significantly influence the increase of the general psychophysical ability of an individual. Athletics is the starting point and foundation for all other sports. Since 1896, it has been included in the regular program of the Olympic Games. It represents the basic and most important content of each Olympic Games. The International Athletics Federation (IAAF) was founded in 1912 in Stockholm and today has 212 member states. Since 1983, the world championship for seniors has been held first for four years and now for two years, since 1986 for juniors and since 1999 for cadets. Since 1930, the European Championship for senior men and women has been held every fourth year, and since 1929, the Balkan Games. Athletics is the most developed in the USA, followed by Russia, Germany, Cuba, Kenya and Jamaica. The results of running events are decided by finishing position (or time, if timed), while victories in the jumps and throws are achieved by the highest or farthest time in a series of attempts. The simplicity of the competition and the lack of need for expensive equipment makes athletics one of the most common competitive sports in the world. Athletics is mainly an individual sport, with the exception of relay races and competitions that combine the athletes' performances into a team result, such as cross-country. Organized athletics dates back to the time of the ancient Olympic Games in 776 BC. n. e. The rules and format of modern athletics events were defined in Western Europe and North America in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and then spread to other parts of the world. Most of the modern top-level competitions are conducted by the International Association of Athletics Federations and its member federations. Athletic competitions are the backbone of the Summer Olympics. �
