Belgrade is the capital and most populated city of the Republic of Serbia and the economic, cultural and educational center of the country. The city lies at the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, where the Pannonian Plain joins the Balkan Peninsula. Belgrade is the administrative center of the City of Belgrade, a special territorial unit with its own local government. It is the fourth most populous country in Southeast Europe after Istanbul, Athens and Bucharest. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe. The first settlements on the territory of Belgrade date from the prehistoric Vinča, 4,800. years before the new era. The city itself was founded by the Celts in the 3rd century BC. is, before it became the Roman settlement of Singidunum. Belgrade has been the capital of Serbia since 1405 and was the capital of the South Slavic states from 1918 to 2003, as well as Serbia and Montenegro from 2003 to 2006. The population of Belgrade according to the 2011 census was 1,166,763. while 1,659,440 or 23.09% of the population lived in the wider area. The narrower part of the city covers an area of 359.96 km2 and the population density is about 3,736 inhabitants per km2. The city of Belgrade has the status of a special territorial unit in Serbia with its local self-government, and its area is 3,222.68 km2. Its territory is divided into 17 city municipalities, each of which has its own local authorities.
