Gabriel Boric Font (born 11 February 1986 in Punta Arenas) is a Chilean politician and President-elect of Chile.

Biography

Boric was born in 1986 in the town of Punta Arenas, known for its large population of Croatian origin. His paternal ancestors immigrated to Chile from the island of Ugljan in the late 19th century, while his mother is of Catalan descent. Boric studied at the Faculty of Law of the University of Chile, and was president of the Student Federation of the University of Chile in 2012. As a student representative, he became one of the leading figures of the Chilean student protests 2011-2013. Boric was twice elected to the House of Representatives representing Magalan and the Antarctic District, first as an independent candidate in 2013 and then in 2017 as part of the Broad Front, a left-wing coalition he formed with several other parties. During the civil unrest in 2019 in Chile, Boric was one of the politicians who negotiated an agreement that paved the way for a referendum on changing the Constitution. In 2021, he was elected presidential candidate of the Apruebo Dignidad coalition (which included the Broad Front, the Communist Party and other smaller movements) after winning the official by-elections with 60% of the vote. On December 19, 2021, Boric defeated Jose Antonio Cast in the second round of the presidential election, receiving 55.9% of the vote. He will become the youngest president in the history of Chile and the second youngest state leader in the world, as well as the president elected with the largest number of votes in history.

Foreign policy

On the occasion of his 2018 foreign policy proposal, then-MP Gabriel Boric criticized the regimes of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, describing these countries as repressive dictatorships. the government should be complete in terms of democracy and human rights, without any approval of dictatorships or autocracies, even if it bothers anyone. " Boric did not recognize the results of the general elections in 2021 in Nicaragua and appealed to the Communist Party of Chile (one of its coalition partners) to "withdraw" its decision to recognize the results of the elections in Nicaragua.
