Republika Srpska Day is celebrated on January 9 as one of the national holidays in Republika Srpska. The baptismal feast of the Republic of Srpska is unofficially the Holy Archdeacon Stefan. The Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina twice declared the holiday unconstitutional - on November 26, 2015 and March 29, 2019, claiming that it discriminates against the other two constituent peoples because it is celebrated on religious holidays. although every day of the year is dedicated to saints according to the doctrine of the Serbian Orthodox Church. On January 9, 1992, in Sarajevo, the then Assembly of the Serb People in Bosnia and Herzegovina adopted the Declaration on the Proclamation of the Republic of the Serb People of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The Republic was proclaimed in the areas of Serbian autonomous regions and areas and other Serbian ethnic units in Bosnia and Herzegovina, including areas where the Serbian people remained in the minority due to the genocide committed against them during the Second World War. The Republic of the Serb People of Bosnia and Herzegovina was part of the federal state of Yugoslavia as its federal unit. Until the election and constitution of new bodies and institutions that were to be established by the Constitution, the functions of state bodies were performed by the Assembly of the Serbian People in Bosnia and Herzegovina and its Council of Ministers. The seat of the organs of the Republic was in Sarajevo. With the adoption of the Constitution of 28 February 1992, the Republic was renamed the "Serbian Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina". It was proclaimed the state of the Serbian people and the citizens who live in it, but still as a part of the federal state of Yugoslavia. By Constitutional Amendments VII and VIII of 12 August 1992, the name of the Republic was changed to the current and final name "Republika Srpska".

Legal provisions

The Day of the Republika Srpska was first determined by the Law on Celebrations and Festivities (1992) as one of the holidays of the Republika Srpska. This law was later repealed. Then, the Republic Day was re-established by the Law on Holidays of the Republika Srpska (2007) as a national holiday celebrated on January 9.
