Carles Puigdemont (born 29 December 1962) is a Catalan politician and journalist. He performed the function of the Prime Minister of Catalonia, and he was also the President of the short-lived Republic of Catalonia. In 2011, he was elected mayor of Girona, where he lived for years, after winning the municipal elections held the same year. Four years later, he became the new president of the Association of Municipalities for the Independence of Catalonia. On January 10, 2016, the Parliament of Catalonia proposed him for the 130th President of the Generalitat of Catalonia. This followed an agreement previously agreed between the "Together for Yes" coalition and the "Popular Candidacy for Unity (CUP)", in which it was announced that he would replace Arthur Massa as president of the Generalitat in exchange for a guarantee of parliamentary stability for his government. On January 14, he presented his new government. On October 27, 2017, his government declared independence, which Spain suspended. On October 30, Pujdemon fled to Belgium with his associates to avoid a trial for rebellion and unconstitutional activities.
