History

On March 4, 1947, France and the United Kingdom signed the Treaty of Dunkirk as an Agreement on Alliance and Mutual Assistance in the Event of a Possible German or Soviet Attack in the Post-World War II Period. This alliance was extended to the Benelux countries in 1948, in the form of the Western Union, and is also called the Organization of the Brussels Agreement, established by the Brussels Agreement. Talks on a new military alliance, which could include North America, led to the signing of the North Atlantic Treaty on April 4, 1949, and included Western Union member states with the addition of the United States, Canada, Portugal, Italy, Norway, Denmark and Iceland. was largely inapplicable, until the Korean War, when the establishment of a North Atlantic Treaty Organization to implement the agreement was initiated, through an integrated military structure: this included the establishment of Allied High Command in 1951, which adopted a military structure and salary.
