Pedro Juan Caballero (ˈpeðɾo ˈxwaŋ kaβaˈʎeɾo) is a Paraguayan city and the capital of the Amambay Department. The city is located in the northeast of Paraguay, on the border with Brazil (with the province of Mato Grosso do Sul), on the strategic highway Route 5, starting from the city of Concepcion. According to the 2012 census, the city had a population of 81,650. According to the 2002 census, the city had a population of 64,153. .

History

Pedro Juan Caballero was founded in 1893. It was named after Pedro Juan Caballero (1786-1821), one of the heroes of the independence movement in Paraguay. The city is now a major center of cross-border trade with Brazil, where alcoholic beverages and tobacco products can be bought at low prices, as well as smuggled goods.
