Republika Srpska, unofficially Srpska, is one of two entities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, next to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is located in southeastern Europe, more precisely in the western part of the Balkan Peninsula. The largest city is Banja Luka and is the seat of most institutions of the Republika Srpska, as well as its political, administrative, economic and university center. Srpska borders the state border with the Republic of Serbia, Montenegro and the Republic of Croatia, and the inter-entity line with the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It was established on January 9, 1992 as the Republic of the Serbian People of Bosnia and Herzegovina by the decision of the Assembly of the Serbian People in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In August 1992, it was renamed the Republika Srpska, and by the General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina signed on November 21, 1995, it became internationally recognized as one of the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 1,170,342 people lived in Srpska. The results of the 2013 census also show that the total number of households in Republika Srpska was 408,825, and 584,261 apartments. Republika Srpska is a member of the Assembly of European Regions, which provides support to regions in the process of European enlargement and globalization. all forms of cooperation with institutions and organizations abroad. Republika Srpska has eight representative offices abroad: in Austria, Belgium, Greece, Israel, Germany, Russia, the USA and Serbia.


Republika Srpska bases the etymology of the name on the titular people of the Serbs. In its territory throughout history there were many states that we know today with the adjective Srpska in the name: Serbian land, Serbian principality, Serbian kingdom, Serbian empire, Serbian Bosnia, Serbian despotism. In the new century, in addition to the existence of neighboring Serbia, which bases the etymology of its name on the name of the same people, another territory with the same title was established: the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs. In the area of ​​this territory, special states of Slovenes and Croats were later formed, but half a century later, two territories of the third mentioned people, Serbs, the Republika Srpska Kr.
