The Axis Powers were countries that participated in World War II as opposed to the Allies (Anti-Hitler Coalition). The three main powers were Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, and the Japanese Empire, also known as the "Rome-Berlin-Tokyo Axis." At the height of their power, these forces took control of large parts of Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, but were defeated at the end of the war. Membership in this alliance was unstable, so some countries entered or left during the war.
