Serbian Super League in the 2016/2017 season. was the eleventh competition organized under this name by the Football Association of Serbia since the founding of the league in 2006, and it is the first stage of the competition in Serbia. The lower rank is the First League of Serbia. The competition system remained the same as in previous seasons. After 30 rounds played according to the double point system, the league of 16 clubs is divided into two groups of eight on the basis of the then determined placement - upper (Play-off, positions from first to eighth) and lower (Play-out, positions from ninth to sixteenth). ). The number of points won in the first part of the league is then halved (in the case of dividing an odd number, the quotient is rounded to the first whole number), and further competition within groups takes place according to a single point system in a total of 7 rounds. After the end of the competition in the Play-offs and Play-outs, the final placement of the Super League for that season is determined. Play-off: The best placed team wins the title and acquires the right to participate in the qualifications for the Champions League. The teams that finished the competition in the second and third positions get a place in the qualifications for the Europa League. In case one of the three first-placed clubs is also the winner of the Serbian Cup in the same season, the fourth-placed team of the league also goes to the qualifications for the Europa League. Play-out: The two worst placed teams (positions 15th and 16th in the final standings) will be eliminated from the Super League, and from next season, two clubs that took the best positions in the First League of Serbia will compete in the elite rank instead.
