79 - Eruption of Mount Vesuvius. 1501 - Portuguese sailors discover All Saints' Bay in Brazil. 1509 - A painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo is presented to the public. 1688 - William of Orange sails for the second time from Helewlsloys to seize the crowns of England, Scotland and Ireland from King James II during the Glorious Revolution. 1755 - An earthquake in Lisbon destroys two-thirds of the city, killing 60,000 people. 1755 - A law is approved by the British Parliament in 1765 for the Thirteen Colonies to force them to pay for British military operations in North America. 1886 - The Serbian Royal Academy is founded in Belgrade, later the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
