1610 - The first Dutch settlers land on Manhattan Island, now central New York. In 1626, the Dutch bought the island from the Indians for a few bales of cloth and cheap jewelry and built the settlement of New Amsterdam in its southern part. 1719 - Roman-German Emperor Charles VI expels the Spaniards from Sicily. 1793 - The first public zoo opens in Paris. 1868 - Prince Mihailo Obrenović is assassinated in Kosutnjak, Belgrade. The assassins were arrested, immediately convicted and shot in Karaburma.
