1812 - After retreating from Moscow, the remnants of Napoleon's troops suffer heavy losses on the Berezina River. 1918 - The First Republic of Austria is proclaimed, the day after the capitulation of Germany in the First World War and the abdication of Emperor Charles I. 1920 - The Treaty of Rapallo is signed, by which the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, under pressure from Great Britain and France, ceded to Italy Istria, Julian Krajina, Zadar and the islands of Cres, Lošinj, Lastovo and Palagruža, and later Rijeka. 1927 - Leo Trotsky, one of the leaders of the "left opposition" within the party, is expelled from the Bolshevik Party, and Stalin becomes the undisputed leader of the USSR.
