1185 - Emperor Andronicus I Comnenus is overthrown in a revolt in Byzantine Constantinople, while Isaac II the Angel ascends the throne, overthrowing the Comnenus dynasty and replacing it with a new angelic dynasty after more than a century of rule. 1683 - King Jan III Sobieski of Poland defeats the Turkish army and breaks the two-month second siege of Vienna, preventing Turkey from invading Central Europe. 1772 - Russia conquers the Persian region along the Caspian Sea, including the city of Baku. 1801 - Russian Tsar Alexander I Pavlovich annexes the Kingdom of Georgia. 1848 - A new constitution is adopted by Switzerland, making it a federal union with a strong central government. 1878 - Egyptian obelisk known as Cleopatra's Needle, made of Aswan marble around 1475 BC. n. e., set in London. 1890 - A British South African company establishes the city of Salisbury, which becomes the capital of Rhodesia. 1916 - The offensive of the Serbian army against the Bulgarians and Germans in the First World War begins in Kajmakcalan.
