409 - Vandals and Alans cross the Pyrenees and invade Spain from Gaul. 1307 - Soldiers of King Philip IV of France capture most of the Knights Templar, who later plead guilty to heresy under torture. 1792 - US President George Washington lays the foundation stone of the White House, the presidential residence in Washington. 1860 - First aerial photograph taken from a balloon over Boston, USA. 1884 - London's Greenwich District is established as a universal, zero meridian, from which longitudes and time zones on Earth are calculated. 1921 - The Soviet republics of Russia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia sign the Kara Peace Treaty with the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, establishing today's borders between Turkey and the South Caucasus. 1923 - Turkish parliament declares Ankara, formerly Angora, the capital of Turkey. 1943 - Italy declares war on Germany, its former ally in World War II, after capitulation. 1944 - Resnik liberated from the Germans. 1972 - A Soviet Ilyushin 62 passenger plane crashes near Moscow airport. All 176 passengers and crew members were killed in the biggest plane crash so far. 1976 - A Bolivian Boeing 707 cargo plane crashes on Santa Cruz's main street after taking off. Three crew members and more than 100 people were killed on the ground. 1977 - Four Palestinians hijack a German Lufthansa plane flying from Mallorca over the Mediterranean and divert it to Mogadishu, Somalia. German commandos successfully defeated the kidnappers and released the passengers on October 17. 1988 - A laboratory test shows that the "Shroud of Turin", in which, according to many Christians, Jesus Christ was buried, is false and dates back to the Middle Ages. 1990 - The first liturgy after 73 years is held in the Church of St. Basil the Blessed on Red Square in Moscow. 1993 - A court in Hamburg finds German Guenter Parche guilty of stabbing Yugoslav tennis player Monica Seles. Sentenced to two years probation. 1997 - British Prime Minister Tony Blair met with Sinn Fein leader Gary Adams, which was the first meeting between the British Prime Minister and the leader of Northern Ireland
