May 20 - By signing a peace treaty in Jeddah with King Ibn Saud, the United Kingdom recognizes Saudi sovereignty over Hijaz and Najd, which later merged into Saudi Arabia. May 21 - American pilot Charles Lindbergh becomes the first axis to fly across the Atlantic Ocean on its own. May 22 - A magnitude 8.3 earthquake shakes the Chinese city of Xining, killing at least 200,000 people.
