March 2 - King of Cambodia Norodom Sihanouk abdicates in favor of his father Norodom Suramarit.


April 5 - Winston Churchill resigns as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom due to ill health at the age of eighty. April 6 - Anthony Eden becomes Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.


May 9 - West Germany becomes a member of NATO. May 14 - An agreement on the establishment of the Warsaw Pact is signed in Warsaw. May 15 - The Austrian State Treaty is signed in Vienna, ending a ten-year Allied occupation, and Austria becomes an independent republic within the borders of January 1, 1938.


May 26 - A Soviet delegation led by First Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Nikita Khrushchev arrives in Belgrade on its first official visit since 1948.


June 2 - Yugoslav and Soviet leaders Josip Broz Tito and Nikita Khrushchev sign the Belgrade Declaration, which normalizes relations between Yugoslavia and the USSR, disrupted by a 1948 Informbureau resolution. June 11 - 83 people injured and at least 100 injured when two cars collide in the Le Mans Grand Prix race.


July 17 - Walt Disney opens its first Disneyland in Anaheim.


September 6 - In riots orchestrated by the Turkish government, an enraged mob carries out a pogrom against the remaining Greek population of Constantinople.

December 1 - Tailor Rosa Parks is arrested after she refuses to give way to a white man on a bus in Montgomery, which led to a boycott of buses in Montgomery.
