March 6 - The former British colonies of Gold Coast and Togoland are united into a state called Ghana, which gains independence from the Commonwealth, ushering in a wave of decolonization in Africa. March 25 - Belgium, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, France and the Netherlands sign the Treaty of Rome establishing the European Economic Community and the European Atomic Energy Community.
