January 3 - Alaska is admitted to the Union as the 49th US state.
January 8 - General Charles de Gaulle becomes the first president of the Fifth French Republic.
February 16 - Guerrilla leader Fidel Castro becomes prime minister of Cuba after ousting dictator Fulgencio Batista on January 1, 1959.
March 1 - Archbishop Makarios III returns to Cyprus from exile in the Seychelles, where he was expelled by the British.
June 3 - Singapore is declared an autonomous state within the Commonwealth, in which the British retain the departments of defense and foreign affairs.
July 5 - Indonesian President Sukarno dissolves parliament, suspends the 1950 constitution and imposes a dictatorial regime.
July 14 - The first nuclear-powered ship, the USS Long Beach in Queensley, Massachusetts, is launched. The ship reached a speed of 30 knots per hour and had two nuclear reactors.
July 31 - A group of Basque students founds the separatist organization ETA.
August 21 - Hawaii is admitted to the Union as the 50th US state.
