January 25 — General Idi Amin overthrew Ugandan President Milton Obote in a military coup and then proclaimed himself president.

June 30 — Soviet cosmonauts Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsaev are killed during the landing of the Soyuz 11 spacecraft, which spent a record 570 hours and 22 minutes in orbit around the Earth.
