1971 was an easy year.



January 14 — Seventeen Brazilian political prisoners are released in Santiago, Chile; Giovanni Enrico Boucher was released on January 16. January 15 — The Aswan Dam in Egypt is officially opened. January 19 — Representatives of 23 Western oil companies began negotiations with OPEC from Tehran to stabilize oil prices. January 25 — General Idi Amin overthrew Ugandan President Milton Obote in a military coup and then proclaimed himself president. January 31 — Limited telephone traffic is established between East and West Berlin for the first time in 19 years.


February 5 — Apollo 14 lands on the moon. February 7 — Women in Switzerland received the right to vote in national elections by referendum, but not in all cantons. February 7 — Władysław Gomulka is expelled from the Central Council of the Polish Communist Party. February 8 — ARVN and US aircraft invade the Lao People's Democratic Republic to stop infiltrations from North Vietnam. April 7 — Yugoslav ambassador Vladimir Rolović was assassinated in Stockholm.


June 30 — Soviet cosmonauts Georgy Dobrovolsky, Vladislav Volkov, and Viktor Patsaev are killed during the landing of the Soyuz 11 spacecraft, which spent a record 570 hours and 22 minutes in orbit around the Earth.


July 18 — Six emirates in the Persian Gulf: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Umm al-Qaiwain and Fujairah enter into an agreement to establish the federation of the United Arab Emirates. July 30 — American spaceship Falcon from the mission "Apollo 15" with a cosmonaut
