February

February 20 - Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Region votes to secede from Azerbaijan and annex Armenia, sparking the Nagorno-Karabakh war.

March

March 2 - President of the League of Communists of Serbia Slobodan Milosevic, addressing the gathered Serbs from Kosovo in front of the building of the Assembly of SFR Yugoslavia, announced the arrest of Albanian leaders in Kosovo. March 16 - Iraqi authorities use chemical weapons to kill about 5,000 Kurdish civilians in the northern city of Halabja.

May 8 - The first Belgrade Marathon was held. May 15 - Raif Dizdarevic is elected President of the Presidency of SFR Yugoslavia. May 18 - Soviet troops withdraw from Afghanistan. May 25 - The last event on the occasion of the Youth Relay was held in Belgrade.

July 3 - A rocket from the American warship "Vincennes" shot down an Iranian passenger plane "Airbus A300" over the Persian Gulf in the last week of the Iran-Iraq war, killing all 290 passengers. July 6 - An explosion of the Piper Alpha oil platform in Britain's North Sea kills 167 people. July 9 - The first rally in support of the Serbian state leadership was held in Novi Sad. During the next three months, there was no larger place in Serbia where a rally in support of the then president of the Central Committee of the League of Communists of Serbia, Slobodan Milosevic, was not held. These events were called "truth rallies".

September 18 - During an anti-government demonstration that killed thousands of people, a military junta toppled Burmese President Maung Maung.

October 4 - Slobodan Milosevic, in a speech to workers in front of the Federal Assembly in Belgrade, promises changes to Serbia's constitution and "stopping the counter-revolution in Kosovo." October 5 - At a rally in Novi Sad, several tens of thousands of citizens threw stones and bottles of yogurt at the building of the leadership of the then Socialist Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. The provincial leadership, SAP Vojvodina and SK Vojvodina, resigned, and this event was called the "yogurt revolution". October 17 - In response to "truth rallies" organized by the Serbian leadership, mass demonstrations begin in Kosovo
