January 3 - A Russian Tupolev Tu-154 passenger plane crashes in Siberia, killing all 124 passengers and crew. January 24 - The Governor of the National Bank of Yugoslavia, Dragoslav Avramović, presented a new dinar with a 1: 1 ratio to the mark with the aim of stopping hyperinflation in the FRY. January 31 - In the Somali capital, Mogadishu, U.S. Marines, accompanied by a convoy of U.S. diplomats, open fire on people gathered near a food distribution center, killing at least five civilians and wounding many.

February 5 - During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 68 people were killed and 200 wounded in a grenade at Sarajevo's Markale market in the city center. February 9 - NATO issues ultimatum to Republika Srpska to withdraw all heavy weapons around Sarajevo within 10 days

March 18 - An agreement on the establishment of a Muslim-Croat federation in BiH is signed in Washington

April

April 8 - Republika Srpska Army launches offensive on Gorazde. April 15 - Mobtel Serbia was founded in Belgrade, and started operating on December 31. April 25 - The United States, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Russia form a Contact Group. A month later, five member states presented a peace plan that would divide BiH into two entities: Muslim-Croat with 51% of the territory and Serb with 49%.

May 1 - Brazilian Formula One driver Airton Senna is killed in the race for the San Marino Grand Prix. May 6 - A submarine tunnel under the English Channel is opened, connecting France and the United Kingdom. May 10 - Nelson Mandela is elected president of South Africa and becomes the country's first black president.

June 1 - South Africa is readmitted to the Commonwealth after 33 years. June 17 - O'Jay Simpson is arrested for the murder of his wife and her friend after a chase on the highway that was broadcast on television. June 23 - South Africa, after a decade of international isolation due to apartheid policies, regains its seat in the United Nations General Assembly.
