January 6 - After a train crash in Granitville, South Carolina, about 60 tons of chlorine are released into the atmosphere. January 27 - Holocaust survivors, former members of the Red Army and leaders of more than 40 countries, gather on the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

February 10 - North Korea announces possession of nuclear weapons. February 11 - World of Warcraft is released in Europe. February 14 - Former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri is assassinated when an explosive device detonated near his car, triggering the Kedar Revolution. February 14 - About 60 people are killed and more than 200 injured in a shooting in Tehran, Iran. February 14 - YouTube is founded, the first video posted on April 23. February 15 - The Kyoto Protocol, an amendment to the international agreement on climate change, enters into force.
