1703 - A two-day Great Storm kills at least 8,000 people in southern England. 1865 - Louis Carroll's book Alice in Wonderland is published 1880 - The Great Powers force Turkey to hand over Ulcinj to Montenegro, which the Montenegrins occupied in the war from 1876 to 1878. 1914 - A British warship, the Bulwark, explodes during World War I while ammunition is loaded. Of the 750 crew members, only 12 survived. 1918 - The Grand National Assembly in Podgorica decides to overthrow Petrovic Njegos and the Kingdom of Montenegro to join the Kingdom of Serbia. 1922 - The tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun is discovered by English archaeologist Howard Carter in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor. Carter and Lord Carnavon were the first people to enter the tomb after more than 3,000 years, when a pharaoh was buried in it. 1940 - Germans occupy part of the city in occupied Warsaw during World War II, building a ghetto for about half a million Polish Jews. 1941 - Six Japanese aircraft carriers sail in great secrecy to Pearl Harbor. 1942 - The Anti-Fascist Council of the People's Liberation of Yugoslavia was founded in Bihać during the Second World War, and 54 delegates elected the Executive Board of AVNOJ, headed by Dr. Ivan Ribar. 1949 - A constitution is adopted in India, making the Indian Union a republic within the British Commonwealth. The constitution came into force in January 1950. 1965 - France launches first artificial satellite. 1967 - The People's Liberation Front proclaims the People's Republic of Yemen (South Yemen) in Aden, after 128 years of British colonial rule. 1978 - Iranian religious leaders and politicians declare a general strike that has paralyzed life in Iran in an effort to overthrow Shah Reza Pahlavi. 1979 - The International Olympic Committee votes to renew China's membership after 21 years of absence. 1986 - An Iranian rocket hits the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killing 48 civilians in the Iraq-Iran war. 1987 - A typhoon destroys about 14,000 homes in the Philippines, killing 270 people. 1990 - A peace plan is approved by the UN Security Council
