1525 - Spanish conqueror Hernan Cortes executes the last Aztec emperor, Quautemoc. 1825 - A treaty is signed between Russia and Great Britain to determine the border between Alaska and Canada. 1832 - The National Library of Serbia is founded in Belgrade as part of the State Printing House. The library was then under the Ministry of Education, and since 1871 an independent institution. The decision on the establishment was made by Prince Miloš Obrenović. 1844 - During the screening of the new frigate "Princeton", prepared by the US Navy on the Potomac River, one of the cannons exploded on the ship, killing the Secretary of State, the Secretary of the Navy and several other government officials. 1845 - US Congress approves annexation of Texas. 1862 - The first law on advocacy is passed in Serbia. 1916 - The transfer of the majority of the Serbian army, about 140,000 soldiers, from occupied Serbia, in the First World War, to the island of Corfu is completed. Recovered in the following months, reorganized and armed, the Serbian army returned to fight on the Thessaloniki front in the summer of the same year. During the retreat through Albania in December 1915, more than 200,000 soldiers and civilians died of starvation, exhaustion and winter. 1921 - A Kronstadt revolt of Russian navy sailors against the Bolsheviks breaks out in Kronstadt. 1922 - Britain formally declares Egypt's independence, but retains control of the Suez Canal and the country's defense. 1931 - Oswald Mosley, a member of the House of Commons, founds the New Party, which becomes the British Fascist Union a year later. 1933 - A day after the burning of the Reichstag, Adolf Hitler persuades German President Paul von Hindenburg to sign the Reichstag Fire Decree, abolishing personal liberties, freedom of speech and of the press, and the right to assemble. In the next few days, more than 4,000 communists were arrested. 1939 - The first issue of Politikin zabavnik is published. 1948 - The last British troops leave India. In 1947, the Labor government abolished British rule over India. 1953 - Yugoslavia, Greece and Turkey sign an agreement in Ankara on political, economic and military co-operation, known as the Balkan Alliance. 1974 - US and Egypt resume diplomatic relations after a seven-year hiatus
