1399 - Henry Bolingbroke, founder of the English Lancaster dynasty, becomes King Henry IV, the day after he abdicates Richard II, the first monarch in English history to abdicate. 1846 - American dentist William Morton first uses anesthesia to extract teeth. 1912 - Serbia and Bulgaria declare mobilization for war against Turkey. The first Balkan war, from October 1912 to May 1913, in which both Greece and Montenegro fought against Turkey, ended with the liberation of the Balkan peoples from Turkish rule. 1915 - Radoje Ljutovac, a Serbian artilleryman, shot down an enemy plane with a cannon.
