328 - Athanasius the Great is elected Patriarch of Alexandria. 1502 - Spanish navigator Christopher Columbus sails from the Spanish port of Cadiz for his fourth and final voyage to the New World. 1763 - A siege of Fort Detroit begins during Pontiac's war against the British. 1788 - A British parliament abolishes the slave trade. 1877 - Romania declares independence, one month after forming an alliance with Russia against the Ottoman Empire. 1901 - Australia's first parliament opens in Melbourne. 1911 - A group of officers, participants in the May coup and assassination of King Aleksandar Obrenović in 1903, founded the secret organization "Unification or Death", or "Black Hand", in Belgrade. 1926 - Americans Richard Byrd and Floyd Bennett first fly over the North Pole. 1927 - Canberra becomes the capital of Australia instead of Melbourne. 1936 - Italy officially occupies Abyssinia, now Ethiopia, and proclaims Italian King Vittorio Emanuel III emperor of Abyssinia. 1945 - Final defeat of Germany, conquest of Berlin by the Soviets.
