The American Film Institute, abbreviated AFI, is an independent non-profit organization in the United States of America founded by the National Endowment for the Arts, which in turn was founded by President Lyndon B. Johnson ( Lyndon B. Johnson) when he signed the National Endowment for the Humanities and Arts Act in 1967.
