Film is an art form that consists of a moving image, ie several images that in quick succession create an illusion of movement. Film is a mass medium and is often combined with sound. Movies can be real scenes shot with a movie camera; photographed drawings or miniature models; computer generated images or computer animation; or a combination of these. Film as a story-telling medium is a popular source of entertainment, and has given rise to a global industry. Film is also an effective medium for advertising, educating or indoctrinating. Feature films are often referred to as movies. These are recorded after a script, with actors performing the script's dialogue and actions. The director directs the filming and controls the acting, which is documented with the help of cameras and various sound and lighting equipment. The result, in the form of scenes, is cut together into a whole. There are also other types of films, such as animated films where the individual still images consist of drawings or digital models, or documentaries where the intention is to convey reality. The word film is derived from the photographic film on which the images are exposed, a technology that has now been largely replaced by digital film.

History of the film

The technique of showing film was developed from various visual inventions, such as the zoetrope and the still camera, in the late 19th century. The first official film screening was performed by the Lumière brothers in Paris in 1895, but the one who is considered to have captured the first moving images on film was Louis Aimé Augustin Le Prince. Unfortunately, only two short films are preserved. Like many early films, the others have been lost. After the Lumière brothers came several silent films in which the cutting technique was refined (see, for example, the Russian film The Armored Cruiser Potemkin), and the differences from the theater were clearly established in that there was limited space for lines on the signs representing the dialogues. Eventually, Lumière's technique was combined with the phonographic technique, so that image and sound were presented simultaneously. The first animated feature film - El Apóstol - was made in 1917 by Quirino Cristiani, 20 years before Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which has become more famous. From the 1920s, Hollywood has dominated the international market, and also the technological development. The first film to be partially dubbed was The Jazz Singer from 1927, in the United States. After that, film technology has developed in a couple of steps: color film had its breakthrough with Gone with the Wind from 1939, various methods of showing film in 3D were developed in the 1950s, and at about the same time four-channel sound. For much of the film's history, it has competed with television. The film industry is today one of the world's largest industries, with Hollywood in the United States and Bollywood in India at the forefront. On February 2, 2000, the first digital film screening in Europe, by Philippe Binant, will be held with DLP CINEMA technology by Texas Instruments.

Film production

Most films are shot after a script, with actors performing the script's dialogue and actions. The director controls the action, which is preserved with the help of cameras and various sound equipment. The result in the form of scenes, is cut together into a whole, which is often intended to be shown in cinemas or on television. However, there are other types of films, such as animated films where the individual still images consist of drawings or photographed models, and documentaries where the intention is to depict reality. Today, the film industry is one of the world's largest industries, with Hollywood in the United States and Bollywood in India at the forefront. Films are usually based on a film script, which is divided into scenes, and in addition to dialogue indicates whether it is interior or exterior shooting, whether it is day or night, and whether certain processes are required.
