The Philosophy Portal The word Philosophy can be derived from the Greek Φιλοσοφία (Philosophia). A word that consists of the roots philos love and sophia wisdom and can thus mean love of wisdom. In ancient Greece, where the philosophy of the West originated, philosophy embraced the study of all knowledge and knowledge of that time. Gradually, various special sciences, such as physics, psychology and sociology, branched out from philosophy and became their own fields of knowledge. As a consequence of this, it is today said that philosophy studies such problems and concepts that cannot be treated by the other sciences. Typical examples of such concepts are knowledge, truth and value.
