Week numbers are numbers assigned to a week. It is used in some European and Asian countries, such as Sweden, but is uncommon in the United States, among other places. The standard is used in most countries in Europe. The standard also describes the way to number the weeks within a year. Week 1 is the first week of the year that contains at least 4 of the days of the year. Other ways of expressing the same thing are that the week that includes the first Thursday of the year is week 1 or that week 1 is the week where January 4th is. If week 52 ends before 28 December, extra week 53 will be added, which will then migrate into the new year. Previously, the year ended with week 53 if week 52 ended before 31 December, but this week number did not migrate to the new year, but week 1 took over on 1 January regardless of the day of the week.
