October 19, 2021
The 2021 La Palma volcanic eruption is an active fissure eruption of a volcano in Cumbrebieja Natural Park on La Palma Island. It is one of the most powerful volcanoes in the Canary Islands, Spain. The eruption began on September 19. Seismic clusters, which have occurred since September 11, showed erupting magma beneath the island. This is the first eruption since 1971. The volcanic eruption has led to the evacuation of more than 5,000 people, and lava flows have destroyed more than 450 buildings. However, after volcanic ash began to fall the following week, the index rose to level 2.
