Kyoto City (Japanese: 京都市; Romaji: Kyōto-shi (pronounced: kyoto) is the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture. and is the former capital of Japan which is considered to be the center of Honshu Island. Kyoto City is also one of the members of Major Cities "Keihanshin" and Kyoto City It is also ranked as the 11th most populous city in the world in 2012.

History

Beginning

Although there is archaeological evidence that a settlement on the island of Japan around 10,000 BC. But there is hardly any evidence of human activity in the area. It wasn't until the 6th century that evidence of humans was discovered at Shimogamo Shrine.

Heian-kyo

In the 8th century, Buddhist priests were very influential and involved in the affairs of the emperor's court. This caused the emperor to decide to move the capital to a region far from the influence of Buddhism. Emperor Kammu chose a new kingdom at Uda Village. Known as Heian-gyo (平安京, "City of Peace and Peace"), the new capital was based on the Tang Dynasty's Chang'an. Only adjusted to a smaller size, and later in AD 794 became the city of the court. This is the beginning of the Heian era in Japanese history. However, even after The junta would set up other cities as administrative centers other than Kyoto. (by the Muromachi Shogunate) such as Kamakura (by the Kamakura Shogunate) or Edo (by the Tokugawa Shogunate). The capital city of Japan is still Kyoto, the city where the emperor resided.
