Desalma (Portuguese: Desalma; English: Unsoul) is a Brazilian mystical series. The screenplay was written by Ana Paula Maia. The series premiered on Globoplay on October 21, 2020.
The series depicts the life and traditions of the Ukrainian diaspora in Brazil, as well as Ukrainian mythology (monkeys, witches, the holiday of Ivan Kupala).
The series was screened at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2020, where it was recognized by viewers and various film critics.
Brazilian film production will be broadcast internationally by Sony Pictures Television.
The story begins with the disappearance of a local schoolgirl, Galina (Anna Melo), in 1988 in the fictional town of Brigidy in Santa Catarina, founded by Ukrainian immigrants.
At the time of the girl's disappearance, the city was celebrating Ivan Kupala, a pagan holiday associated with fertility rites, which was later included in the Orthodox Christian calendar and is actually held at the turn of July 6-7. The tragedy led to the banning of the holiday in Bridget, and thirty years later, when the tradition is restored, the mysterious events are repeated again.
The action takes place in the Burko and Skavronsky families.
