Zhanaozen (Kazakh: Жаңаөзен) is a city, the center of the Zhanaozen city administration of Mangistau region of Kazakhstan.
The population is 91,332 people (2009; 48,871 in 1999).
It was founded in 1968 and was originally called Novy Uzen. Since 1992, Kazakhstan has used only the Kazakh name - Zhanaozen, then the name changed on Russian maps, although as such there was no renaming of the city.
Protests in 2011
The oil protests, which began on December 16, 2011, escalated into mass riots, which burned down the city hall, hotel and gas company building, looters began looting shops and banks, and police lost control of the city. The prosecutor's office reported the death of 10 people. They were also injured, in particular, among law enforcement officers. According to unofficial sources, at least 70 people died. Armored vehicles were introduced on the street. According to the country's Prosecutor General, two dozen young men staged riots during Kazakhstan's Independence Day celebrations, attacked police, set fire to their cars, overturned a Christmas tree and destroyed the stage. After that, clashes with police began. Meanwhile, oil protests have been going on in the central square of Zhanaozen since the summer of 2011. On the eve of these bloody events, the protesters received information about the possible dispersal of the action due to the celebration of Independence Day. Despite the clashes, the oilmen did not leave the main square, and other oilmen who were dissatisfied with their salaries and working conditions wanted to join them. On December 17, 2011, the Kazakh authorities announced the suppression of riots in the city. About 70 suspects in the pogroms have been detained.
Protests in 2022
On January 2, 2022, protests began in the city. The reason for this was the rise in gas prices. Subsequently, the protests spread to other cities, including Almaty. On January 4, 2022, the President of Kazakhstan Tokayev declared a state of emergency. As of January 7, after the introduction of Russian troops, the uprising was suppressed.
