The flagship of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Navy, the missile cruiser "Moscow" sank on April 14, 2022, as a result of a strike on April 13, 2022 near Snake Island with two missiles "Neptune" coastal missile system RK-360MC "Neptune" of the Ukrainian Navy. The missile cruiser "Moscow" was the largest warship of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation and was one of the six largest ships of the Russian Navy. Moscow is the first lost flagship of the Russian navy since the Russo-Japanese War, and the largest warship sunk during World War II since the Second World War. According to the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine, out of 510 people on board the ship, only 58 were rescued.

Course of events

According to Radio Liberty, on April 10, 2022, the missile cruiser "Moscow" of the Russian Black Sea Fleet was anchored in Sevastopol Bay opposite Apollo Bay. Late in the evening of April 13, 2022, the head of the Odessa regional military administration, Colonel Maxim Marchenko, told his Telegram channel that the Ukrainian military had struck the Russian cruiser Moscow with Neptune cruise missiles, causing "very serious damage." Later, Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, clarified that there was a strong fire on the Moscow ship in the Black Sea basin. At the same time, the adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Anton Gerashchenko stated that "the entire Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation has been withdrawn to carry out urgent rescue measures." Ukrainian Pravda also reported that this information was confirmed by anonymous sources in Ukrainian intelligence. The Twitter account of OSINT UK, quoted by Meduza, published a recording of the SOS signal, which was allegedly transmitted from aboard the cruiser at about midnight Moscow time. Around the morning of April 14, 2022, the Russian state agencies TARS and RIA Novosti, citing the Russian Ministry of Defense, reported that the crew of "Moscow" was evacuated after the detonation of ammunition due to fire. The ministry confirmed that the ship was severely damaged by the fire, the causes of which are "established", but did not report any casualties.
