Biography

Childhood and adolescence

He was born in the village of Kukarka, Yaran County, Vyatka Province, in the family of a clerk. From 1902 he studied at the Kazan Real School. Member of the RSDLP (B) since 1906. From 1906 to 1907 he worked underground in the committee of the RSDLP in Nolinsk, Vyatka Province. From 1907 to 1909 he worked underground (organizer of courses and party equipment) in the committee of the RSDLP in Kazan. In 1908 he graduated from the Kazan Real School. In April 1909 he was arrested and exiled to the Vologda province, where he remained until 1911. From 1911 to 1914 he was a student of the economic department of the St. Petersburg Polytechnic Institute. From 1912 he carried out propaganda work among the workers of St. Petersburg, and collaborated with the Bolshevik newspapers Zorya and Pravda. From 1914 to 1915 he conducted party work in Moscow. He was arrested in 1915 and from 1915 to 1916 was in exile in the Irkutsk province. In 1916 he moved to Petrograd, where he continued his revolutionary activities.
