The Nobel Peace Prize (Scandinavian: Nobels fredspris) is one of six Nobel Prizes bequeathed by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel. According to the Nobel will, the Peace Prize should be awarded to those who: Alfred Nobel's will also stipulated that the prize be awarded to a committee of five, to be elected by the Norwegian parliament. It is still unclear why Nobel chose Norway, which was in union with Sweden at the time of Nobel's death, as the place to award the prize. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has suggested that Nobel may have considered Norway a more suitable country for the award, as it has historically not had such a military tradition as Sweden. Nomination Each year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee invites specific qualified people to submit nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize. The Charter of the Nobel Foundation defines the persons entitled to nominate for the Nobel Peace Prize. It: current and former members of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, as well as advisers appointed by the Nobel Institute; members of national parliaments and governments of different countries, as well as members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union; members of the International Court of Arbitration in The Hague; members of the commission of the Permanent International Bureau for Peace; members and associate members of the Detroit International Institute; professors of universities in the fields of political science, law, history and philosophy Nobel Peace Prize winners. Nominations must usually be submitted by February 1 of the year of award. Nominations awarded by members of the Committee may be submitted after this deadline, but not later than the first meeting of the Committee. In 2009, a record 209 nominations were collected. The Nobel Charter does not allow the dissemination of information on nominations, assumptions and investigations into the award of the Prize for at least 50 years after the Prize has been awarded. During this time, many people became known as "Nobel Peace Prize Nominees," but these claims have no official confirmation. However, the Nominees from 1901 to 1956 were published. When they were published, it became known that Adolf Hitler was nominated in 1939
