Poland (Polish: Polska), official name - Republic of Poland (Polish: Rzeczpospolita Polska) is a state in Central Europe. The 2015 census shows that the country was home to more than 38.5 million people, making it the 5th most populous country in the European Union and the 9th largest in Europe and the 8th most populous. 61% of the population lives in cities. Until 1918, Polish lands ruled over parts of Russia, Austria-Hungary and Germany. After the First World War, Poland was declared an independent state. November 11, 1918 is considered to be the official date of independence. Poland has a developed market industrial and agricultural economy. It is a regional state in Central Europe, with the largest stock exchange in Central and Eastern Europe. The basis of the Polish economy is industry, namely machine-building, metallurgy, mining and chemical.
