List of cities of regional importance in Ukraine
August 20, 2022
Cities of regional significance (cities of regional subordination) are a category of cities that were not part of the districts until July 2020. This status was granted to cities that were economic and cultural centers, had a developed industry, communal economy, a significant state housing fund, with a population of more than 50,000 people. In some cases, cities with a population of less than 50,000 people were included in the category of cities of regional importance, if they had important industrial, socio-cultural and historical significance, a close prospect of further economic and social development, and an increase in the number of the population. Cities of regional importance had budgetary preferences: 75% of the personal income tax went to their city (not to be confused with local) budgets. Due to changes to the Budget Code, adopted in December 2014, the percentage of deduction of this tax was reduced to 60%. As of October 25, 2020, there were 187 cities of regional importance in Ukraine. With the formation of territorial communities as a result of administrative and territorial reform in Ukraine, the status of cities of regional importance was leveled.
