The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom is the head of government, who performs many executive functions that nominally belong to the Sovereign - the head of state. As is customary, the Prime Minister and the cabinet he heads are accountable for their actions to the parliament of which they are members. With the advent of a cabinet government in the eighteenth century, its head became known as the "Prime Minister" (sometimes also the "Prime Minister" or the "First Minister"); to date, the Prime Minister has always held one of the ministerial posts (usually the position of First Lord of the Treasury). The first Prime Minister is usually considered to be Robert Walpole, 1st Earl of Orford, who headed the government from 1721 to 1742. Since 2019, the post of Prime Minister has been held by Boris Johnson from the Conservative Party, who has replaced his party colleague Theresa May. List of prime ministers from 1721
