The Wikimedia Foundation Inc. is a non-profit American organization that provides the material foundation for numerous online communities that create content that is freely distributed; performs control functions in them. Communities work on the "wiki" technology, hence the name (-media here - short for "multimedia").
Most of the work to create "free content" (texts and images distributed under GFDL, CC-BY (-SA) or in the public domain) and "free code" (GPL licensed software) users. Jimmy Wales, the founder of the then-existing Wikipedia, announced the founding of the Wikimedia Foundation on June 20, 2003.
The Wikimedia International Foundation is a non-profit organization that operates through donations. All projects supported by the fund: Wikipedia, Wiktionary (explanatory dictionary), Wikiquote (a collection of statements of famous people), Wikibooks (online library), Wikinews (news portal) and others, free from advertising and non-profit. Employees of the fund are responsible for technical support.
The Foundation's activities are carried out through voluntary donations. Fundraising campaigns are conducted by the Foundation on a regular basis. So in January 2010 it was announced that for the 2009/10 financial year the fund managed to raise $ 8 million, donations were made by 240 thousand individuals and legal entities from around the world. In February 2010, $ 2 million was donated by Google to the development of Wikipedia.
The Wikimedia Foundation Inc has announced a fundraising campaign in 2011 to support the free encyclopedia Wikipedia and related resources.
The 2010/11 campaign lasted from November 15, 2010 to January 15, 2011. During this time, $ 16 million was raised. The following year, $ 24 million was donated, and $ 35 million in July 2012-April 2013. The funds are spent, first of all, on support and maintenance of servers and data centers, software development, implementation of various projects.
