Kharkiv (IFA: [ˈxɑrkiu̯] (listen); Deputy Ukrainian: Kharkiv, Latin: Zacharpolis) is a city in northeastern Ukraine in the Slobozhanshchyna region, the scientific center of Ukraine, and the administrative center of the Kharkiv region. The second most populous city in Ukraine with a population of 1,433,886 people. The area of ​​the city is 370 km. Together with the surrounding cities and districts, it forms the Kharkiv agglomeration with a population of over 2 million people. From December 19, 1919 to June 24, 1934, Kharkiv was the first capital of Soviet Ukraine, hence the name "first capital". The great scientific, cultural, industrial and transport center of Ukraine was the third industrial center in the former USSR. 60 research institutes, 41 higher educational institutions, including VN Karazin KhNU, which is one of the top 500 universities in the world and NTU "KhPI", which is one of the top 1000, 8 museums, city art gallery, 7 state theaters and several dozen non-state, 80 libraries. He has a full set of awards of the Council of Europe: European Diploma, Honorary Flag, Honorary Distinction and European Prize.

Symbolism

The coat of arms of the Sloboda-Ukrainian province, which also served as the city coat of arms of Kharkiv, was designed in 1775 by Heraldmeister Prince Mykhailo Shcherbatov and approved by Catherine II on September 21, 1781 as the coat of arms of the Kharkiv governorate. It is a quadrangular heraldic shield, pointed at the bottom, this shape is called French. On the green background of the shield depicts a crossed horn of plenty and a golden caduceus with silver wings (symbol of the god of trade Mercury), wrapped in silver snakes.
