April 1 - the same-sex marriage law comes into force in the Netherlands. This law legalizes same-sex marriage, which happens for the first time since the reign of the Roman emperor Nero.
April 28 - the Soyuz TM-32 spacecraft takes off from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, carrying the first space tourist - the American Dennis Tito.

May 6 - Space tourist Dennis Tito returns to Earth aboard Soyuz TM-31 (Soyuz TM-32 remains docked to the ISS as a rescue ship).

June 23 - an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale occurs in southern Peru.

On July 2, the world's first autonomous artificial heart was implanted in the body of a patient, namely Robert Tools.
On July 3, near Irkutsk, a Tu-154M passenger plane of the Vladivostok Avia airline, which was flying Yekaterinburg-Irkutsk-Vladivostok, crashed during landing. All 145 people on board died.
